Are you (am I) a noise making poser, or a value adding participant.

At a recent lunch with a couple of old friends and a couple of new friends, we were talking about a few of the more prolific local twitter users. One of the guys referred to them as a cliq to explain why I haven’t heard back from one of them (apparently I’m not in it).
The conversation quickly turned to listing these people and if they had real reason to be looked upon as experts. This list contained more ”poseurs” than real productive business people. And a few people we just weren’t sure about.
The good part of social networking for professionals like myself is the chance to make relevant connections to potential friends, vendors, customers, peers, brands, etc.
The bad part is the noise that wanna-bee’s and blow-hards make.
I dislike many networking events because the most chatty people are trying to sell you insurance, lending, or something else you don’t need right then. It’s rarely a respected peer who wants to know/share more about something you are interested in (or are an expert at).
I’ve realized that I don’t write/blog much partly because the landscape doesn’t promote much beyond the few who are the most active writers. We should be paying more attention to the guys/girls who are DOING the most relevant business not the ones who TALK about it most.
Let me not be completely negative. Some are doing a great job of being creative, attentive, humorous, insightful, and conversational.
I just wish there were less “noise makers” and more “value-adders”
